City Savings Bank Completes Big Bang Core Banking Migration to Sunline’s Cloud-Native SunCBS

The successful production cutover moved City Savings' critical core banking operations and data onto a new cloud-native platform powered by Sunline, marking a major milestone in its technology modernisation.

MANILA, Philippines – City Savings Bank (City Savings), a thrift bank and subsidiary of UnionBank of the Philippines, has completed the implementation of a new cloud-native core banking platform powered by Sunline’s SunCBS and deployed on Huawei Cloud. The transformation replaces the City Savings' legacy core environment and brings critical banking functions, including customer information management, deposits, lending, teller operations, accounting, reporting and enterprise integration, onto a modern technology platform. More than a system replacement, the programme reshapes the technology environment supporting the bank’s daily operations, providing City Savings with a more modular and scalable architecture and greater flexibility to introduce new products, integrate surrounding applications and respond to evolving business requirements.

From Legacy Core to Cloud-Native Banking

At the centre of the transformation is Sunline’s SunCBS, built on a distributed architecture incorporating microservices and domain-driven design principles. The architecture breaks core banking capabilities into more manageable business and technology components, allowing individual services to evolve with greater flexibility while reducing unnecessary dependencies across the wider core environment.

This approach also strengthens integration between the core platform and surrounding banking applications, an increasingly important capability as banks connect core processing with digital channels, lending systems, data platforms and other enterprise applications. Huawei Cloud provides the underlying cloud infrastructure for the new environment, supporting the computing, scalability and operational requirements of the bank’s mission-critical workloads, while the combined platform and cloud architecture provide City Savings with a more adaptable core environment without compromising the reliability required for day-to-day banking operations.

Executing a Complex Big Bang Core Banking Migration

One of the most significant achievements of the programme was the successful execution of a Big Bang migration, transitioning City Savings' core banking data and operations to the new core banking environment within a carefully managed production cutover.

The successful transition required coordinated execution across business, application, infrastructure, integration, data, testing and operations teams, with City Savings, Sunline, Huawei Cloud and Thakral One, working closely throughout the implementation lifecycle, from solution design and development through testing, migration and production deployment.

For a mission-critical transformation of this scale, the successful cutover represented more than a technical go-live; it reflected the level of preparation, governance and execution required to transition an established banking operation onto a new core architecture while maintaining operational continuity.

Enabling the Bank’s Next Stage of Growth

With Sunline SunCBS now in production, City Savings has established a more modern core environment to support future business growth, product development and digital banking initiatives. The modular architecture gives the bank greater flexibility to enhance products and services over time, while a modernised integration environment can simplify connectivity between the core and surrounding systems.

The project represents an important milestone in its international core banking business and further demonstrates its ability to deliver end-to-end core banking modernisation across overseas markets for Sunline, spanning platform implementation, architecture, system integration, migration and production transition.

“I am very pleased with the outcome of the implementation. I would like to thank the entire Sunline team, from the Business Analysts and developers to the project managers, for their dedication and commitment throughout the project. Everyone worked toward a common goal: ensuring a successful and timely go-live,” said Jane Vergara, the Chief Information Officer of City Savings.

The successful go-live marks not only the completion of a major core banking transformation, but also the beginning of a new phase in City Savings' technology journey. With the new core now in production, the bank has moved beyond system replacement to establish a more agile and scalable technology base for future growth, product development and digital evolution. The project also further strengthens Sunline's experience in delivering complex, mission-critical core banking modernisation across international markets.
